My intention with my vases is to create objects that are useful and beautiful. This body of work was originally inspired while living in Portugal. Two influences from that time have continued to affect the work.
In the gardens we visited I was captivated by the buds of the flowers just before they open. They were full and ready to burst with the flower inside. This inspired the swell of my vases and the movement in the body of the piece.
I was also mesmerized by the cloister windows in Portugal. The windows were round, without glass, and within each circle was a complicated woven pattern of carved rock. Each pattern was different from the others. Looking at the windows I could not help but imagine flowers poking through the woven forms.
Since then I have made the tops of my vases using the potters wheel to throw long, thin strips of clay. After they are thrown I manipulate them to create patterns and an illusion of being woven. The interwoven forms create structure for the flowers. I am interested in the way the flowers look in the pieces and how the pieces function to enhance the beauty of the flowers. My desire is that the work is sensual, engaging and has a quiet appeal.
